Alexey Philippovskiy, Alrosa’s CFO, commented on the results: “In 9M 2019, the diamond market was impacted by the oversupply of polished diamonds and challenging situation in India’s financial sector. As major producers have reduced diamond supply by a quarter since the beginning of the year and Indian cutters begin to see stocks gradually winding down, the supply and demand in the diamond pipeline seem to be heading towards balance again. Since early August 2019, the prices and demand have somewhat stabilised resulting in increased monthly sales, with total sales adding 7%, 42% and 2% m-o-m in August, September and October, respectively”.

South Africa’s Petra Diamonds (LON:PDL) has sold a 20.08-carat blue precious rock it found in September at its iconic Cullinan mine for $14.9 million, or about $741,000 per carat, which is the highest price analysts had predicted.

The “exceptional” blue gem quality diamond, Type IIb, was acquired by a “leading diamond company” that wishes to remain anonymous, Petra said.

“We are very pleased with this result which is in line with our expectations and confirms the resilience in the value of very high quality blue diamonds, undoubtedly one of nature’s rarest treasures,” CEO Richard Duffy said. “We look forward to following this exceptional stone’s journey to its polished form

Had to have a look in this train wreck because you spend a lot of time over at the stinker talking about AUL. You really did a mischief on yourself investing in this scheme didn't you? Ended up in court and tears before bedtime. Maybe close the commsec account and get a job sweeping roads.

The Fancy Color Diamond Index for the third quarter of 2019, published by the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), shows that prices of Fancy Color diamonds have fallen 0.5%, “driven by a 1.5% decline in the prices of yellow diamonds”. Prices of blue and pink diamonds have remained stable during the period.

Prices of pink diamonds suffered a slight decrease of 0.1% overall, mainly due to a decrease of 3% in the 5-carat Fancy Pink category. However, all Fancy Vivid Pinks rose 0.4%, with Fancy Vivid Pinks of 1 and 3 carat categories increasing by 1.6% and 1.7%, respectively. Prices of blue diamonds enjoyed a 0.1% increase, with the sharpest rise seen in the 1.5-carat Fancy Vivid Blue category (2.1%). Over the past 12 months, the price of this category increased by 10.6%.

FCRF Advisory Board member Ephraim Zion said: “The civil unrest in Hong Kong has had a negative impact on the entire luxury market including diamonds and jewellery. Having said that, I’m not surprised that Fancy Color Diamonds have been more resilient and managed much better than their counterparts!”
